In the first case, the implication is that we are doing something to the child: testing, evaluating. In the second case, the implication is that the child is doing something: demonstrating, performing. In the first case, we label the child based on the outcome. In the second case, we promote the child to the next course of study when the pre-requisite proficiencies have been demonstrated. Traditional letter grades must be eliminated. They serve only to label children. "He is an "A" student, she is a "B" student." On the previous page, we explained that grades of "F" and "D" are inappropriate and even destructive. We don't believe that anyone can demonstrate that grades of "A", "B", or "C" have any well-defined meaning. We assume that these grades are an accurate reflection of the child, but in fact there are far too many variables in grading to make letter grades truly meaningful. A "proficiencies profile" must be established for each student. In this profile, proficiencies in each discipline shall be designated as "passed" or "in progress." The proficiencies profile becomes a snapshot of the student that conveys to prospective employers and institutions of higher education a clear picture of the competencies possessed by the student.
